Our sewer line was clogged by fabric/dryer sheets. We never flush fabric, where could it have come from?

Our rental house was experiencing a clog so our landlord called the plumbers. They snaked out to the main sewer line in the yard and found a fabricy/dryer sheet like substance. Problem is we never use dryer sheets or flush fabric (no kids either). Now the landlord is blaming us for the clog- is there any other way this could have gotten into our line besides from us? We recently had very heavy rains in the area (causing something on the order of 100-year flooding).

Anything is possible, but how about this? Anyone use those diaper wipes? How about stuff like Cottenelle? If you do, it could be those, even though they say they are flushable, they can snag on sharp edges in plumbing and catch other "debris" eventually making a clog. I have had two here in this house I just moved into 2 years ago, and after having poopy water backing up into the tub/shower, toliet and bathroom sink. I snaked all of the drains in the house myself (I am very capable) and still, no relief. A helper I had at the time suggested calling the city, which I did. They came and snaked from my house out about 60 feet and lo and behold, a whole mess of those "potty sheets" came out both times they had to do it. I don't use them, but I am sure my old neighbor next door probably does, even though she swears she doesn't. I think she's afraid to admit it, but whatever, its done its done. Tell the landlord, unless he can prove it came from you (could have been there a long time before you moved in, or even from a previous tenant, he cannot charge you) and it seems if there is some question of where it came from (flood or otherwise) he may have to eat that charge. If you want to be a good tenant, you can offer to pay half, but I would say if you know for sure, one of your kids, or guests could have, or might have, just be careful, now you know they are a problems, do not use them. I hope this helps you out!
Reply:Thank you for choosing my answer and the BEST ANSWER and I am glad you worked it out with the landlord. Good luck! Report It

Reply:probably a paper towel

still shoudnt be flushed also could be wads of toilet paper tenant shouldnt be responsible first time now you no if you did flush a paper towel

make them prove if big deal for them they have to prove it was you could of been in for years

snagged on root or cast iron fragment
Reply:Those sheets could be confused with "paper towels". They do not disintegrate like toilet paper and "will" clog the drain!!!!
Reply:Tell him you'll need a detailed certified report from a waste engineer certifying that those are fabric sheets, and a police report stating that they came from your unit or units... Until you see certified copies your not paying for anything..
Reply:That could have been from previous tenants. I hope your landlord did not ask you to pay the bill!
Reply:don;t take the blame this thing could have gotten in your line from another sewer back up.
