I have a tough toilet clog that I have tried using a plunger for several times to no success.
The problem is, the toilet isn't completely clogged. It flushes a little bit, but with no force, so it would only be safe to urinate in.
Are there any simple at home solutions I could try before calling a plumber. I don't exactly want to waste money.
Toilet clog question...?
First of all, are you noticing a lack of water pressure in any other part of the house, such as the bathroom sink or shower? if so, then it may be due to a lack of water pressure in general which would be an entirely different problem. That could be related to a leaky pipe underneath the house. Only a plumber could tell you that for sure.
If it's only happening with your toilet, then some foreign matter is clogging the pipe. You may want to try pouring some very hot water in the toilet bowl and flushing, to see if the hot water will dissolve the matter. Sometimes, these clogs clear themselves overnight. I'm not sure how long you have had this problem, or how deep the clog is in the pipe.
You can try going to the hardware store and buying a bottle of a liquid plumber type product. Read the label first, to make sure it is recommended for clogged toilets. If so, that may solve your problem.
There is also a type of device you can buy for about $20.00 called a "Closet Ogger". It's a metal coil with a handle on one end of it that is used to unclog a toilet. You force the one end into the hole at the base of the toilet bowl as far into the drain as you can go. Then you "reel" it out in hopes the "matter" comes out attached to the coil. Then you may have cleared the clog.
If all fails, then you may have to call a plumber for the use of this rooter machine. That'll do the trick. Hopefully it's not a tree root problem. That's what happened to me.
Good luck!
Reply:On tough clogs that won't plunge, I take the plunger and block off the drain at the bottom of the toilet, flush and let the water rise till it is close to overflowing and then plunge like crazy. The added water pressure will bust through almost all tough clogs.
Reply:Use a liquid drain cleaner like Liquid Plumber. If that doesn't clear it then you will have to use a toilet snake or get a plumber.
Reply:Go to Home Depot and get a plumbers snake (about $25-30) that should take care of it.
Reply:If you have the time and aren't afraid to get your hands dirty take the toilet off the floor and look up from the bottom and see whats stuck in there, you may have to fish around with a coat hanger to find your obstruction. Or try to borrow a closet snake from someone, these are designed just for this purpose.
Reply:You could also buy some Drain-O and drain the water before you you pour it in there.
Reply:you can buy a "closet auger" do not use a regular plumbing snake, this is a special snake used to clear cloged toilets
they are availble at any hardware store click this link to see what they look like
Reply:Try holding down the lever to flush for a while so the water level increases... it might help push whatever's plugging up your toilet... it helps for me
