i have a 1987 chevy caprice with 84,000miles and i just wanted to know if a oil pump screen gets clogged can cause the engine to die out? because i was driving one day doin 45mph and the car just turned off on me like somethin got clogged? i took the car to a mechanic he said everything looked fine to him battery was charging, alternator was fine, car started up right away,etc...about 2 months ago i had mobile do a oil system cleaner on it so i was thinkin maybe that caused my oil pump screen to get clogged and makin my car turn off? or it can be a clogged fuel filter and bad pcv?
If your oil pump screen is clogged can it cause your car to turn off while driving it?
yep, it sure can. if the valves gets too hot from lack of oit, your car can shut down. but that sounds more like fuel then oil problems. change the gas filter and see if that helps. if it gets plugged up, it will shut down.
Reply:if oil pump screen was plugged you would hear alot of engine noise and it would tie up from lack of oil, dont think that is your problem . my guess would be ignition module, pickup coil something along those lines if it was kind of sputtering then died i would guess more like fuel filter, pump
Reply:Yes, but the engine wouldn't restart. If it starves for oil, it will seize. You should also have seen a warning light.........
Reply:Some cars are set up to shut down when the oil pressure gets low, but I don't think the caprice is one of them. You either lost spark or fuel. If it was an imediate shutdown it was probably ignition related. If it sputtered or hesitated a bit before stopping it is probably fuel related. Fuel filters are cheap, try that first.
